What is a Query?

A QUERY is a paragraph to be posted on a genealogical web site - or published in a genealogical Quarterly, Newsletter, or publication.

(read below how to write a QUERY)

HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE QUERY

I. Connect your ancestor to a LOCATION in your query. Give as much data about location of residence as you can. Town or township, county, and state should be included if at all possible.

II. Give at least an approximation of the TIME PERIOD that they lived there. Example: 1860's; late 1800's, early 1900's; 1830's, 1930's, or more precise if at all possible.

III. Location and time period are important for the following reasons:

1. It will help readers of your query to know if they are researching the same ancestor you are.

2. Records from various time periods are kept in different locations.

3. You are MUCH more likely to get a response if you narrow the query as to time & place.

IV. Give your own e-mail address and regular postal address also. We occasionally publish these in our genealogical quarterly, and snail mail address is appropriate for those who don't have e-mail, in order for them to correspond with you.

V. Offer to share information that you may already have, or may acquire.

VI. Beyond the above, just state your objective: Birth date of: Parents of: Death date of: Burial spot of: correspondence with; information about; ETC. Put it in your own words, read other queries for examples.

VII CLICK HERE to submit this data and it will be posted on our ACGS web pages at http://www.ashtabulagen.org

VIII. Queries are posted for 90 days and may be renewed or replaced at your request.

IX Be sure to read the QUERIES already posted to see if anyone else working the same lines.

WHAT IS A SURNAME REGISTRATION?

A surname registration is just that - a place where you can register or post surnames that you are working on, with the hopes of finding others either working the same lines, or with information on that line.

II. For both QUERIES and SURNAME REGISTRATION items, researchers who have information for you can just click on the e-mail address shown there for there, and can e-mail you directly. If they do not have e-mail, they can write you at your snail mail address.

What is a Look Up?

A LOOKUP is a simple check of an index of a county record, county history, family history, etc., where a volunteer will check the index and return page citation where your ancestor's name may be found. You may then request copies of the microfilm page, or printed page where that reference is found.
